The path to drawing confidently starts with this simple idea...
Draw 15 minutes in your sketchbook, everyday.
Simplicity is King
I try and keep my tools as simple as possible. Ballpoint pen or Papermate Flair Black marker medium is a must. Follow that with the Pentel Arts Aquash water brush for quick tone. My favorite sketching pencil is the Crayola Colored pencil. The lead is soft and you just can't beat the price. Just remember, the tools don't make the artist, perseverance in daily practice wins the day.
Let's talk about color.
#1 Color Rule: Be a master of value first before using color.
Value is defined as the amount of black used. The side of a pencil, an ink wash, the smearing of charcoal, these are all applications of using value. If you have your values correct, it does not matter what color you use, having the right values will make your picture work. One of the tools featured in the photo is the Aqua brush. It is great because you can fill the handle with any liquid product, I like to mix a little water with ink. This makes a great wash of value.
